Reads & Refreshments: The High Fashioned

September 3, 2015

There’s nothing like flipping through the color-saturated, high-gloss pages of a fashion book to generate a little off-the-cuff creativity. This week, we’re setting aside time to explore a beautifully appointed Dries Van Noten volume. Unfolding like a museum exhibit, the book lets us in on the lauded designer’s creative process, showing the imagery, outfits and iconography that inspired his most impressive pieces. And since we couldn’t peruse these couture pages without a bespoke beverage in hand, we created the High Fashioned, our take on the bourbon-and-bitters Old Fashioned, brightened by a vibrant and lusciously complex Lambic.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
½ cup Kriek Lambic (we used Brooklyn Brewery’s “K” is for Kriek)
1 ½ ounces rye or bourbon
1 teaspoon sugar
Several dashes orange bitters
Orange peel, for garnish

HOW TO MAKE IT…
In a shaker, add sugar and bitters and muddle until sugar is dissolved, adding a splash of water if needed. Add rye or bourbon and stir well. Rub the orange peel along the inside and rim of a chilled glass. Pour whiskey mixture into the glass and top with lambic.

More R&R ideas, right this way.
